There are specific LEED programs that provide a roadmap for measuring and documenting success for every building type and phase of a building lifecycle. (All links below will take you to the national USGBC website that contains a plethora of up-to-date information about LEED.)
Certification
Buildings can receive LEED Certification by meeting certain prerequisites and performance benchmarks ("credits") within the categories of site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. Projects can be awarded Certified, Silver, Gold or Platinum Certification depending on the number of credits they achieve.
