The Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. It is a voluntary, consensus-based national rating system that promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability.

Certification
Buildings can receive LEED Certification by meeting certain prerequisites and performance benchmarks ("credits") within the categories of site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. Projects can be awarded Certified, Silver, Gold or Platinum Certification depending on the number of credits they achieve.
