Free Passive Design Tools Workshop
Tuesday, June 7th, 2011
The University of Idaho – Integrated Design Lab (IDL) is hosting a free workshop to demonstrate a new set of passive design tools researched and developed by the IDL in conjunction with Idaho Power Company. The tool day will demonstrate how to use a series of simple calculation worksheets to analyze the following passive design strategies/implications:
Summer Peak Heat Gain Calculations
Cross Ventilation Cooling Capacity
Stack Ventilation Cooling Capacity
Thermal Mass and Night Flush Ventilation
The worksheets are intended to help expedite the design process of the critical parameters pertaining to these passive design strategies in order to make them easier for design teams to integrate early on in their projects.
The workshop: An example building will be provided to the participants so that they can follow along with the presenters as the tools are demonstrated. The workshop will end with a free lunch and presentation of a case study comparison between the excel spreadsheet tools and digital simulation methods, and a discussion will follow. Every participant will walk away with a free copy of the tools to use in their practice and IDL staff will be available for follow up questions.
Things to Bring: A laptop is encouraged if you want to follow along with the presenters and use the worksheets in real time. However, it is not necessary and it is possible to just come and watch the tools being demonstrated.
When: Friday, June 24th, 8:00 am – 1:00 pm
Location: Classroom at the IDL’s new location. 306 S. 6th St. Boise, ID.
Registration: Room is limited to the first 24 individuals who RSVP to jdunn@uidaho.edu. Registration deadline is June 17, 2011.

Green Schools Summit Recap
Tuesday, May 31st, 2011
The USGBC Idaho Chapter hosted their first Green Schools Summit at the Idaho Green Expo May 14th. The summit featured four sessions, which were recorded and are available at http://www.ustream.tv/user/USGBCIdaho/videos. This link and the following paragraph were sent to the ISBA (Idaho School Board Association) to distribute to school board members and superintendents to encourage them to watch and learn about the benefits of green schools.
“With all the talk of budget cuts on a state level, we see greening our schools and conserving on operating expenses by energy audits one of the most positive ways that we can cut the budget without having to cut other programs.” Specifically, the following benefits have been identified:
- 10-15% savings in energy costs through energy audits and tune-ups funded by federal stimulus money
- In the pilot schools in Homedale, replacing compressors for $1,300 resulted in $1,500 in savings in year 1.
A great resource for more information is our Green Schools Advocate for Idaho, Scott Hopkins, scotthopk@gmail.com, and www.centerforgreenschools.org.
