Can Urbanization and A Healthy Environment go Hand in Hand?
Friday, August 31st, 2012
Presented by Idaho Environmental Forum
How can we plan and build our cities to protect or improve our water, and air, increase efficiency, lay the groundwork for public transit, create a connection to community and place, and encourage walking and biking? Better yet, how do we deploy our best practices in a manner that allows, or even attracts, great development? Boise Council Member Lauren McLean, and Anthony Lyons, the new Director of Capital City Development Corporation, will share their vision of our opportunities to improve our environment through urban design.

Healthy Buildings: A New Paradigm?
Tuesday, August 28th, 2012
We spend up to 90 percent of our time indoors where pollutant levels can be much higher than those outside. Building materials can be a significant source of chemical contaminants in the indoor environment yet our awareness, let alone our understanding, of both the types of chemicals and the health risks associated with exposure to these chemicals is relatively limited. This presentation will describe some of the common indoor pollutants, the associated potential health risks and how the different rating systems are beginning (or not) to respond to a newly emerging desire for healthy buildings.
Join us for an engaging presentation by Ms. Elizabeth Cooper.
Thursday, September 6, Noon-1pm
Idaho Power Auditorium, 1221 West Idaho Street, Boise, ID
$10 Lunch from Life’s Kitchen for members $12 for nonmembers
After receiving her Master of Architecture from the University of Oregon, Elizabeth Cooper moved to Boise, Idaho in 2000 to practice architecture. She is currently a partner in The Architects Office, PLLC, designing and managing a wide variety of projects. Recently, she received a Master of Science in Environmental Health from the University of Washington. Ms. Cooper is passionate about helping to create healthier and more sustainable built environments, therefore her research has centered on the assessment of risk from exposure to chemicals in buildings. Combining her extensive experience in the architectural world and her intensive post graduate studies in environmental health, Ms. Cooper is helping to pioneer a new understanding of indoor pollutants, measurement models and building practices to improve the health of people and the quality of buildings.
