Earth Day Community Event

April 24, 2010

10:00 am to 1:00 pm

Let’s go play in the dirt!  In honor of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, the Idaho Chapter of the USGBC will be volunteering at the Boise Urban Garden School (BUGS).  BUGS engages youth, their families, their classrooms and their community through organic gardening, creating a learning environment that promotes nutrition, health and a sustainable local food system.  BUGS provided great workshops for adults and families on topics such as pest management, backyard chickens, food dehydration, etc.  Their long-term goal is to establish a permanent urban agriculture education center.

We’ll be helping them out at their Community Work Day, Saturday April 24th from 10 am to 1 pm.  They are located at 4821 W. Franklin Road, right behind the Wright Community Congregational Church (pull into the church parking lot).  We’ll be prepping rows for planting, planting seeds, and helping out with a small construction project.  The project will be extending the roof on their shed to provide a small covered area for some shade. They have plenty of garden tools, but bring gloves if you have them.  If you can help with the construction project please bring any tools you might have such as extension cords, drills, and saws.  This is a family friendly event!  Even if you can only come for an hour or so, please come by and show your support of this awesome local sustainability focused organization.
